Deceit and Other Possibilities is the debut collection of stories from award-winning author Vanessa Hua. It was published in 2016 by Willow Books. The collection is filled with powerful voices. From immigrants leaving their ancestral homelands to chase the American dream to an actor from Hong Kong who decides to flee after he’s caught up in a sex scandal.
The author writes with a lot of wit and insight. She explores the human mind as it goes through painful experiences and how it always survives. Family and community ties are also explored as different ideas clash in a complex nature Hua evolves into an entirely different type of author with this work.
Deceit and Other Possibilities won the Asian/Pacific Award for Literature. It was listed as New York Times Editor’s Choice. The collection was a finalist for the California Book Award. It was incorporated into Peddie School’s Sophomore Class Read.
