Deceit and Other Possibilities is a collection of stories published in 2016, written about the immigrant experience in America. Hua chronicles the difficulties of being an immigrant, exploring the feelings of being liminal, and having a sense of separated identity.
As the title suggests, "deceit" is a key aspect of these stories, taking many different forms. In some of the stories, characters deceive themselves, while in other stories, the characters are deceived by outward sources. A number of stories in this collection are concerned with first-generation immigrants and their experience navigating America, while others are about second-generation immigrants, and how their experiences differ from their parents.
Despite having some similarities, the stories in this collection are very different. Each of the ten stories illuminates a different aspect of the immigrant experience, revealing its diverse and complex nature. In the text, Hua tells us that the stories were written over many years, perhaps explaining how the stories are so diverse and wide-ranging.
