Clifford's Blues Themes

History

With this book, the reader is able to learn something about history. The reader is taken on a trip in a prison made by the Nazis in World War II Germany. You can learn about how it was to be a black person during this time in history and what the black community experienced in Berlin, Germany under Hitler’s rule.

World War II

This novel features a story from the Second World War. In the story we follow Clifford, who is a jazz musician in Berlin, and how he was caught and treated by the Nazis from 1933 to 1945. In the story we learn about how black people experienced the Second World War. This is a type of story that often is forgotten. Literature often confronts how the Jews were treated during Holocaust, but rarely how badly black people were treated as well. This is an important and difficult theme that the world needs to see.

Desperation, sadness, and awfulness

John A. Williams, the author, is able to paint a picture of the gruesome acts of the Nazis. The book might leave the reader emotionally drained due to its intense realness. The book includes feelings like complete desperation, utterly sadness and awfulness. It is a highly emotional setting and it can be difficult to handle on account of its dire mood.
