    Discuss Lorca’s use of poetry and prose. What seems to be the role of song or poetic language in the play? Which characters seem to speak mostly in prose and which mostly in poetry?

    Lorca’s writing alternates between prose and poetry, speech and song. The main characters mostly speak in prose, simply speaking their thoughts and emotions to one another. Many of the secondary characters, such as the young girls and the beggar woman, speak in poetry or song; their speech is less straightforward and more open to interpretation.
