Black No More Summary

Black No More Summary

Max didn’t want to be black anymore. The world seemed to be too prejudiced against his ethnicity - not to mention that a pretty woman he met in a bar turned him down because of that. Of course, Max knew that there wasn’t any chance, for she was from the South, where discrimination was even worse. That was the main reason why he jumped at the opportunity to whiten his skin. Dr. Crookman could solve the race problem that had been haunting black people for many years. Max didn’t waste his time, for he was a man on a mission.

As soon as he underwent a rather unpleasant procedure of transformation, he left New York and went to Atlanta, his hometown that was imprinted on his memory and the recollections were far from cheerful. The new skin color really made him happy, but that euphoria turned out to be short-lasting. The money he got for selling his story to a newspaper were disappearing and he couldn’t find work. It turned out to be that white people had problems too. Then Max understood that he had to make acquaintances to secure his position in the society.

A white nationalist organization looked like a promising place, so he decided to join it. He made a name for himself soon enough. Mr. Givens, the head of the organization, introduced his new friend to a young lady, who, quite surprisingly, was the same lady from the bar, the one he couldn’t forget about. They got married, though Matthew, Max’s new name, was quite aware of her hatred for black people. Matthew proved to be a gifted manager, the organization was gaining more influence, money and supporters. Even his old friend, Bunny, joined it and became his right hand. The black people became almost nonexistent, they all were white then. This situation only escalated the race problem.

Wanting to separate naturally white people from whitened ones, Mr. Snobbcraft, a politician, ordered Dr. Buggerie gather information about the black antecedents of the whole population of the country. To his absolute shock, the politician learned that his and many other white supremacy leaders’ ancestors were of non-Caucasian origin. Finally, after one unfortunate pregnancy, Helen managed to give a birth to her and Matthew’s first child. The newborn had his father’s skin color and the woman blamed herself for that. Her husband had to tell her the truth and give her a choice to accept him or leave him. The woman preferred the latter option and all of them, Matthew, her, Bunny and even the Given fled from the country.

Several years later, Dr. Crookman announced that his experiments proved that medically whitened people were whiter than representatives of the Caucasian-race. That provoked a new wave of discrimination against white people.
