    Objective:

    Discuss the symbolism of the Mistake Tree and how symbolism can be used in storytelling.

    Structure:

    As a class, revisit the passage in which Gloria and Opal discuss the Mistake Tree in Gloria's yard. You may wish to have a student or multiple students read this section out loud. The Mistake Tree is one of the novel's most prominent symbols. You may use the following questions to prompt class discussion:

    - Why did Gloria create the tree?

    - What does the tree represent to Gloria?

    - Are there other meanings or interpretations the Mistake...
