    Imagery

    Kind of Activity:

    Individual Writing

    Objective:

    Consider imagery as a storytelling technique.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.5

    Structure:

    In the novel, Opal uses a lot of vivid visual language to describe things she experiences, including feelings. In small groups, students should collect at least four of their favorite uses of imagery from the novel. As they do so, students should be encouraged to consider how the author utilizes sensory language to describe things that are invisible and intangible: ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

    Each group should be given an opportunity to share one of their quotes with the class....
