Avatar is a science-fiction movie directed and produced by James Cameron, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It was released on December 10, 2009. The film is set in the middle of the 22nd century, and follows the colonization of Pandora, a moon planet, after the depletion of Earth’s resources. It follows the struggle for resources between the human colonists and the native Na’vi population.

Creator James Cameron began developing the concept of the film in 1994. However, he did not write the screenplay until 2006. It premiered in 2009 to high praise from critics, who marveled at the innovative and impressive visual effects. The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.

The film remains the highest grossing film of all time, and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, of which it won three.
