Artemis

Artemis Analysis

Artemis is a science fiction novel written by Andrew Weir, and was first published on November 14, 2017 by Crown Publishing.

The main themes of the story are that of rebellion and resistance. In the story, the protagonist, a smuggler called Jasmine "Jazz" Bashara, is manipulated into service by the corrupt and extremely wealthy businessman, Trond Landvik. It is clear that despite being set on a fictional city on the moon, there remains a class system with divides its residents. Jazz is at the mercy of Landvik because she needs the money to survive. He exploits her need in order to take over the city’s oxygen supply. However, along the way, she comes to learn of the corruption that is taking over the city, and instead, chooses to assist in taking Landvik down.

Ultimately, the story is both a coming-of age - as Jazz learns a lot of herself and her capabilities as an individual - as well as a message to inspire people to take a stand. There are heavy underlying themes of government corruption and the need to replace them with more democratic systems.
