My Passion for Biology

Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and or outside of the classroom.


Biology. Cellular research. Diagnosing neurological diseases. These are my passions. I was eight years-old when my mother gave me a small but very real microscope. I first used it to examine the cellular structure of my father’s hair. A field study of flora and fauna at Lake Arrowhead captured my heart and mind in elementary school. Enthusiastically and diligently, I proceeded to dissect a pig’s heart, a frog’s leg, and a cow’s eye, in middle school.

As a high-school student, I’ve keenly continued my exploration in Biology classes, asking questions, challenging assumptions, further expanding my knowledge. Each new topic, every new experiment, amazed me with a world of possibilities. I already know my fascination will lead me to study biology and medicine. For my high school Med Club, I invite doctors from various specialties to present the challenges and rewards of their respective fields. I also volunteer at a regional hospital, where I sit with patients, discharge the ones ready to go home, and talk with nurses and doctors from all departments. I’ve witnessed firsthand the physical and mental suffering of patients and sought to alleviate their distress, at least for a few hours.
