Social Class
Social class was a major part of society during the time period in which the novel took place. An example of this is when Ah Zhao was introduced as a poor orphan, rather than the intelligent and artistic person that he was. In addition, people may wear different robes to distinguish different status from each other. Also, the Emperor treated Ah Zhao as "less than" when he claimed Ah Zhao's painting for his own work. Social class is evident throughout the memoir/novel.
Friendship and Affection
The relationship between Mei Lan and Ah Zhao is relevant and important throughout the story. This relationship drives the plot along. The relationship starts with something resembling siblings, but it then progresses to something more deep and meaningful. There are many occasions throughout the story that hints at the deepening relationship, like when Ah Zhao was described to have a shocked and startled reaction to learning that Mei Lan was getting married.
