Along the River Metaphors and Similes

Spread the wings

Doctor Allen suggests that CC leaves her hospital bed and explores her surroundings. He says that it's time for her "to spread her wings a little". She indeed does spread her wings and discovers a path to her never-imagined connection to the past.

A caged bird

Ah Zhao buys the pigeons from the market just to set them free. It is a moment where Ah Zhao reveals his inner desire to be free. Mei Lan observes his content face and realizes that he must feel like a caged bird himself in being a servant. Mei Lan also feels like a caged bird because she can't be who she wants to be and pursue her passion of writing.

Instrument of Heaven

Ah Zhao sees himself as an artist that is dedicated to revealing the artistic truth, not just make things look realistic. This inner striving for revealing the true nature of things makes the artist be in touch with Heaven, makes him an instrument of Heaven.
