A.E. Stallings: Poetry Themes

Difference

Difference is a rather prominent theme in the poem, "The Barnacle." In the poem, the author describes how a barnacle is so different from others in it's family - but it doesn't care. You can see many differences in this world - such as in plants, animals, and especially the emotions of people. However, the author wants to convey that not all of these emotions are wrong just because they are different - they can simply be so different from what another considers "right" that they consider it "wrong", and the denial of your right to opinion should be fought against.

Procrastination

Seen in the poem "After a Greek Proverb," procrastination can bring even the best of us down. Sometimes doing what is most beneficial for yourself requires a lot of effort, and the characters in this poem are simply unwilling to put in that effort. The line "Nothing is more permanent than the temporary" is seen several times throughout the poem, showing that, when you say something is going to happen later, you likely will not actually do it. The author wants readers to know that procrastinating is acceptable sometimes, but using it as a lifestyle is not a healthy way to live.

Restlessness

Restlessness is the theme of the poem "Another Lullaby for Insomniacs," a play on words in itself. However, this poem may not be referring entirely to the act of sleeping, rather not going out and doing things. Throughout the poem, we see how the narrator is battling to find sleep, which is a personified character. However, sleep may actually be resembling laziness, and the narrator simply wants to be lazy once in a while but does not know how.
