Chapter 25 - Electromagnetic Waves - Problems and Conceptual Exercises - Page 900: 6

Answer

Please see the work below.

Work Step by Step

(a) According to the right-hand rule, we point the fingers of the right hand in the +y direction and we see that in order for the thumb to point the direction of propagation in the +x direction, the fingers should be curled toward the +z direction. Thus, the magnetic field will be in the +z direction. (b) We know that according to right hand rule, we point the fingers of the right hand in the +y direction and we see that in order for the thumb to point the direction of propagation in the +x direction, the fingers should be curled toward the +y direction and thus the direction of the electric field will be in the -z direction. (c) We know that in order for the thumb to point in the direction of propagation of the -y direction, the fingers should be curled toward the -x direction. Thus, the direction of the magnetic filed will be in the -x direction. (d) As we know that in order for the thumb to point in the direction of propagation of the -x direction, the fingers should be curled toward the +y direction and hence the direction of propagation will be in the -x direction.
