Woman of Colour (Novel) Background

Woman of Colour is a novel published in 2007 (Broadview Press) by an anonymous writer. Although the novel is fictional, it offers a unique account on the wife of a Black heiress after the slave trade was abolished in Britain. The main character in the novel is the heiress, named Olivia Fairfield, and she is struck with the decision of marrying a white man or having to depend on someone else she does not marry, which would strip her of her newly found honor. Accounts of Britain are described in unique ways, and the effect of people still having a racist attitude is emphasized. Set in the early 1800's, this book is a great work of realistic historical fiction.

The author of this book chose to remain anonymous. It is unknown why he or she chose to do so, but it is likely because they did not want to be associated with the thoughts and ideas portrayed in this book. Many of the descriptions are truthful to the day, so it is quite understandable that the author would not want others to realize that they took the time to write like this.
