“Of course it’s yours. I remember you wearing it once.”

Mrs. Price, Eleven

In the story "Eleven," a young girl named Rachel has to endure and unpleasant event at her school. One day, the teacher takes out an old red sweater and demands to know who owns it. In the beginning, no one is willing to accept they own it so a girl from the class claims that it is Rachel’s. Rachel deny owning the sweater but no one listens to her and the teacher goes as far as to claim that she saw Rachel wearing it once. The reason why the teacher insisted that the sweater belonged to Rachel is that Rachel is actually an immigrant and thus the teacher can’t think that the girl mat be able to afford something better for herself. This way of thinking affects Rachel who loses her confidence and who feels panicked when thinking about the way the children will react because they now believed the sweater was hers.

Fabulosa, La Fabulosa: A Texas Operetta

In the story "La Fabulosa: A Texas Operetta," the narrator talks about a woman named Carmen who instead of letting herself be controlled by men, becomes the one who pulls the strings and manipulates men as she wishes. Until that story, the men in the book all had power over women and treated them badly, mistreating them and behaving as if they owned them. The men who behaved in such a way liked the power they had and thus it would have been unheard of for a man to like being controlled by a woman. This however proves to be right as Carmen has no troubles making the men do what she wants and manipulating as she wants.
