  1. 1

What style does Beattie use in this collection?

In this collection, Beattie's stories are short, laconic and written in the style of minimalism. She does not use a convoluted sentence structure, instead using short, concise sentences, often leaving out some information, leaving it to the reader's imagination.

  2. 2

How does Beattie resist the traditional short story?

Beattie has been both celebrated and criticized for her concise style of writing. Unlike a lot of short stories, Beattie often begins her story in the middle of the action and neglects to tell us the beginning and end of the story; this gives the reader a lot of autonomy about the meaning of the story and allows us to imagine what might have happened after the story ends. Beattie's stories do not build up to a climax and a resolution but instead have a similar tone throughout.
