Wal-Mart
The main heroine leaves her home in Tennessee and moves to Sequoyah. As Novalee’s boyfriend parts with her and she stays on Sequoyah without money, Novalee is forced to live in Wal-Mart. The author of this story says that your native home can give you gladness and comfort. But the irony is the fact that Novalee discovers happiness in the supermarket.
Naivety
When Novalee gave birth to a baby, her mother decides to visit her. Actually, she does not want to see her daughter. All she needs is money and glory, which Novalee has. But Novalee's mother affirms that she came “to tell her the truth. She thinks Novalee may need some help.” But she takes Novalee's money and disappears. The irony is based on the fact that Novalee is very naïve, and besides it is ironic a person who has left her own child proposes help in taking care after a baby as there is nothing she knows about that. How could Novalee trust her mother, if this is not the first time her mom has abandoned her? People don’t change.
Lexie’s Children
Lexie has many children and she cannot live without them. Her children were named "Brownie, Praline, Cherry and Baby Ruth." Yes, these names are unusual, and the irony is that the children will be having a difficult time due to their "sweet" names. All their peers will jeer at Lexie's children.
