Novalee Nation
Novalee Nation is the main heroine of this novel. She is young and beautiful, but behind her beauty she hides all troubles and misery; she is seventeen-year-old and pregnant. It seems that this is the end of the world. But Novalee does not despair, and finds many friends, who help her. Novalee's mother abandoned her in childhood, but this desertion does not mean that Novalee will leave her daughter. Fortunately, Novalee did not inherit mom's character. Instead, she becomes a devoted mother and is ready for anything to protect Americus (her daughter).
Lexie Coop
Lexie Coop is Novalee’s best friend. She is also unlucky, when it comes to love. All her love affairs come to fights, quarrels and broken heart, but she gets enduring love and positive emotions from her five children. Lexie is always ready to devote her life to her children. Lexie is amicable, she and Novalee know each other for short time, but sometimes it seems that theirs is a companionship of many years standing.
Thelma "Sister" Husband
Thelma "Sister" Husband is the most generous and careful personage of the novel. She gives refuge to a strange and pregnant girl. Thelma provides Novalee with the necessities of life; she even leaves a substantial legacy for Novalee and Americus. Thelma and Novalee are not natural relatives. Thelma loves Novalee like her own daughter and serves almost as a guardian angel, who only wishes Novalee well.
Willy Jack Pickens
Willy Jack Pickens is an antagonist. He is Novalee’s boyfriend, who leaves her without money and house in Sequoyah. Willy is an irresponsible and vain individual. He repudiates a daughter, but after some years he will understand his biggest mistake in his life.
Forney Hull
Forney Hull is a striking example of a devoted father and loving man. He works in the local library, and he is very intelligent as a result of this activity. Forney delivers Novalee of a child and she is thankful very much. Forney also cares about Americus; they are like a father and a daughter, and this paternal love is increasing every day. Novalee is attracted to Fortney and takes a liking to him.
