Whitman's poetry can be compared to the works of other poets who were part of the Transcendentalist movement, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, as well as Naturalists such as Stephen Crane. Whitman's work was extremely influential on many American poets and writers who came after him, including Allen Ginsberg, William Carlos Williams, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, and many others.
