Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will discuss notions of property and class, and the underlying assumptions that go into our perception of the two.

  2. 2

    Students will research and write about the life of the author, Thomas More.

  3. 3

    Students will discuss the Protestant Reformation and the cultural milieu that surrounded More as he wrote Utopia.

  4. 4

    Students will examine attempts at a utopian society in 19th-century America and consider how they tie back to More's work.
