    Modernism

    Kind of Activity:

    Classwide Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will understand modernism as a literary and societal movement.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.6

    Structure:

    Virginia Woolf is described as an influential part of the modernist movement. If To the Lighthouse is a modernist work, have students brainstorm what they think modernism is. You can keep track of this as a class on chart paper or a list on a whiteboard.

    Students should be able to come up with many characteristics of modernism. If students get close, teachers can help them get more precise on the aspects. These aspects include:

    • Stream of consciousness
