To symbolism of the title ‘To Paradise’
The author uses the title ‘To Paradise’ figuratively to symbolize the formation of the ‘Free States’ which brings freedom to gay marriages. Historically, the people of same sex relationships faced stigma from society but the new era is bringing hope and freedom. The issue of sexuality is dominant throughout the text and the author is categorical in enlightening readers the journey the people of same sex relationships have travelled to where they are today.
Homosexuality
Homosexuality is symbolized by David’s relationships. At first, David falls in love with Edward, a 23-year old music tutor. David also realizes that Charles is interested in him. Therefore, David is in a dilemma because he does not know who to choose between Edward and Charles as his sweet heart. In the second part of the book, David has an illicit sexual relationship with his boss. David’s sexual relationships with fellow men shows that America is a free society and people are not judged based on their sexuality.
The zootonic pandemics
The zootonic pandemics symbolize human limitations. Charlie is depicted as the only survivor of the 21st century. Charlie survived because she took experimental drug, which also had a side effect because it damaged half of her brain. The author reminds readers that human beings do not have power over everything that happens on earth. One of the big tragedies that limit human ability to cope is pandemics.
