As an introduction to the activity, ask students why it's important to think about secondary characters in a novel like Their Eyes Were Watching God, focused primarily on the main character. Discuss how people are affected by those they surround themselves with. Consider particularly the role of gender at the time the novel takes place: how did men have a particular impact on women's lives and choices?
