But compassion takes work, and we were young.

Ren

Having become stuck in the Sticky Zone, Ren has all time in the world to think about her life and the way she used to live it. Thanks to her beauty and youth, Ren works legally. Although, those who are not as lucky as Ren, those, who stay outside the SeksMart, become not only “illegal but pathetic”. Just like other girls from the Scales, Ren thinks about those “wrecked and diseased” women as “hazardous waste”. They despise them and have no compassion at all, for “compassion takes work, and we were young”. This quote of Ren illustrates, why the society, described in this novel, agrees to comply with all those restrictions and rules imposed by the corporations. They just have “no compassion” to those, who are out of the system. It is not their problem. This indifference and fear for one’s own life kill any thought about resistance.

God has given Adam free will, and therefore Adam may do things that God himself cannot anticipate in advance.

Adam One

According to Adam One, God “has given Adam free will” and this means that Adam “may do things that God himself cannot anticipate in advance”. Being a leader of the sect – although the God’s Gardeners are still better than the corporations, they are the sect – Adam One knows what to say to influence other people. His words are classic example of a story about the sin within nature. When “even God may not always know what you are going to do next”, a human being is left to choose from an endless variety of options. Although Adam One says that God gives people free will, he does dictate his followers how to live, what to eat, what to study and what not.

It was a joke even then, but most people felt CorpSeCorps were better than total anarchy.

The narrator, also Toby’s thoughts

The CorpSeCorps is a corrupted organization and it is not a secret. They could “turn a blind eye”, when it suits them. They allow “kidnappings and assassinations”, if that doesn’t interfere with their interests. However, they also have to pretend that they uphold “the old ideas”. No matter how bad they are, there is a joke that CorpSeCorps are “better than total anarchy”. For when anarchy starts, even money and good connections might turn out to be absolutely useless.

The people will try to save themselves from drowning. They will clutch any straw.

Adam One

Adam One warns people about coming of the Waterless Flood. He uses this story to plant seeds of fear in hearts of his followers. However, the God’s Gardeners should not be afraid of it, for they are saved. At the same very time, Adam One predicts that other people – as soon as they realize that inevitable is coming – are going to “save themselves from drowning”. They are going to “clutch any straw”, but there is no way to help them. Using this dreadful story, Adam One also manages to attract more people to the sect.
