The White Helmets Themes

Religion

Religion is something that many of the volunteers turn to when they are feeling helpless. They are often seen praying and reflecting on the presence of religion in their lives, praising God for helping them to save civilians. Religion is something that inspires the men to carry on going, and gives them a sense of hope when they are struggling with loss, and the devastations of warfare. For example, when speaking about the miracle baby, Mohammed says his rescue was "thanks to God."

Family

We are introduced to Khalid at the beginning of the documentary, who tells us about his family and his young daughter, Amal. He says "My family is very important to me. I'm always worrying about them." Through this documentary, we get an insight into what families are experiencing in Syria, and how they are forced to deal with loss, worry, and grief as a result of the prevailing war.

Khalid says that his family is his motivation for working with The White Helmets, saying "every time I'm on a rescue mission, I think about them." Later, one of the volunteers says that he considers every person he saves "to be my family," which shows how much The White Helmets care about the residents of their city. Mohammed agrees with this sentiment, saying that "All lives are precious and valuable. A child, even if he is not my son, is like my son."

Courage

The White Helmets is an organization comprised of incredibly brave and heroic volunteers. These volunteers risk their lives to save civilians whose houses have been destroyed by bombs. Throughout the documentary, we see their heroism in action, including the rescue of a baby from the rubble in Aleppo after hours of searching. They are called "the real heroes" in the documentary, and we are told that the organization has saved over 58,000 lives since 2013. Mohammed speaks about his role, saying "I'm willing to sacrifice my soul for the sake of the people. I am trying to do something for my country and my people."
