I think that in the context of Joseph Campbell's The Heroes Journey, everybody can be considered a hero: even you and I. We just have different stories to tell so yes the narrator is a hero. He answers the call to adventure, is thrust in, faces obstacles (including himself) and returns home wiser and a changed person.
