The Twits Imagery

The Twits Imagery

Mrs Twits' Intelligence

“Twit may have been ugly and she may have been beastly, but she was not stupid.”

This perception of Mr Twit is eye opening because it disregards the idea that those that are ugly cannot be intelligent – much as those that are beautiful are often deemed to be simpleminded. Indeed, perhaps Mrs Twit had to rely on her intelligence since everyone seems to disregard her for her looks.

Mr. Twits' appearance

“Mr. Twit was one of these very hairy-faced men. The whole of his face except for his forehead, his eyes and his nose, was covered with thick hair. The stuff even sprouted in revolting tufts out of his nostrils and ear-holes.”

Mr Twit is described in a most unpleasant way by Dahl. His general appearance consists of a cave-man type image. Perhaps this is Dahl’s way of highlighting the regressive nature of Mr Twit and, unlike Mrs Twit, he has not advanced, both in intelligence and in behavior.
