The Testaments Imagery

The Testaments Imagery

Description of the Handmaid Doll

The doll is described as follows, 'In the doll house boxed set, there was a Handmaid doll with a red dress and a bulgy tummy and a white hat that hid her face...' In the description, there is use of adjectives such as bulgy to describe the tummy, white to describe her face and red to describe her dress.

Description of the Martha's Hands

While the Martha (housemaid) in Becka's house was telling her the difference between her life and the life of a wife in Gilead, she showed Becka her hands. The hands are described as follows, ' She held them out:her fingers were knobby, the skin was rough, the nails short, with rugged cuticles.' The description contains imagery because one can picture in one's own mind how the Martha's hands looked given the imagery in the description.

Description of a Shunamite

Becka was jealous of the physical appearance of a Shunamite girl and often compared herself to the girl. She once described the girl as, 'She was a stubby girl with two long thick braids that I envied since my own braids were skinny and shorter, and black eyebrows that made her look more grown up than she was.' The description contains imagery because adjectives such as long and thick have been used to describe the girl's hair.

Description of the Protest

The protest that happened in an effort to end Gilead was described as follows, ' A group of of people dressed in black with their faces covered started smashing store windows. Among them was a group of those pearl girls in their silvery dresses and pearls.' The narration is very vivid with every event being pictured in mind due to the effective use of imagery. The imagery has been brought out by the use of adjectives such as black to describe some of the nouns.
