    Miranda's virginity is a topic that is frequently discussed in The Tempest by many of different characters. Why are so many characters interested in Miranda's virginity? Why is her status as a virgin so important?

    Allow the students to briefly list all of the references that Prospero, Ferdinand, Caliban, and Miranda herself make to Miranda's virginity.

    Students are likely to be aware that attitudes toward sex and virginity were somewhat different in Shakespeare's time than they are now.
