Director's Influence on The Stories We Tell

Director's Influence on The Stories We Tell

Director and writer Sarah Polley has a significant personal connection to this documentary, as it is about the history of her family. At the beginning of the documentary, we see behind the scenes details of filming this documentary, and we are introduced to all the characters who are Polley's relatives and family friends.

One of the reasons this documentary is especially personal to Sarah is because it features her late mother, who died during the week of Sarah's 11th birthday in January 1990. In addition to this, Sarah also reveals that she was born from an extramarital affair that took place between her mother Diane, and Harry Gulkin.

This documentary contains interviews with Sarah's loved ones, including her siblings, her father, and family friends. In addition to this, it includes excerpts from Michael Polley's memoir, along with Super-8 footage, that is intended to look like home movies.
