"The Spider and the Fly" and Other Poems Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The truth behind flattering words

“The Spider and the Fly” is a playful rhyme poem intended for children, with an important message. The entire poem is an allegory for menace hiding behind flattering words and is intended to warn the readers to not fall for them. The spider in the poem didn’t succeed to lure the fly in with the words of praise about himself; it is only when he turned the praise onto her that the fly falls into his trap.

Nature

“The Wood-Mouse” is a poem that describes the life of a little mouse in the forest, a hard-working little creature that restlessly collects and prepares for all seasons. The poem is a praise of God and Nature, in which every little thing has its set purpose, a little universe in itself.

Sunshine-Nature’s gift for humankind

“The Sunshine” is a poem that picturesquely describes the phenomenon of sunshine and the effect it has upon the objects and appearance of every day life. The poem is intended as a praise, an ode, to the sunshine as a blessing for humankind.

The Sparrow’s Nest allegory

In the poem “The Sparrow’s Nest” the poet describes a discovered sparrow’s nest which is made out of various bits and pieces, from cloth to dog’s fur. All these “useless” bits and pieces were combined to create something priceless-a warm home. It is an allegory of reusing the old and worn to build something new, so that essentially nothing goes to waste.
