The Shadow Rising Background

The Shadow Rising Background

The fourth book in The Wheel of Time series, The Shadow Rising is a fantasy novel by American author Robert Jordan. The book follows the story of main character and protagonist Rand al'Thor after he proves himself to be the Dragon Reborn.

The Dragon Reborn is a title that can only be earned if one can claim the crystal sword of Callandor. Rand al'Thor is able to do so, and begins to use his newfound powers. He creates a lightning storm to defend territory against the Forsaken, a title given to characters including Sammuel and Semirhage. Rand is introduced to a mysterious reptilian race that are known to locals as the Aiefinn, who cryptically give answers to all of Rand's questions.

The plot's setting occurs in several locations, including Aiel Waste, The Two Rivers, Tanchico, and The White Tower. Dozens of characters are introduced to Rand in each location as he attempts to become the recognized leader of the Aiel clan, given his newfound title. The next book of the series continues his quest, and it fittingly named The Dragon Reborn.

Robert Jordan is the pen name of American author James Oliver Rigney Jr. Born in 1948, Rigney began writing in 1977 and is best known for his Wheel of Time series. He earned a degree in physics at The Citadel Military College of South Carolina. The Shadow Rising was published in 1992.
