The Satanic Verses Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

The Satanic Verses pairs well tonally with Rushdie's second novel, Midnight's Children, as well as Joseph Heller's Catch-22, as examples of postmodern satire. It also draws inspiration from James Joyce's works, particularly Ulysses, as it heavily incorporates a stream-of-consciousness writing style. Critic Angela Carter has said that the city of Jahilia references both Italo Calvino and Frank Herbert.
