The Sand Child Irony

The Sand Child Irony

Irony of fatherhood

For a father and husband, Ahmed's father's priorities should be in protecting his family and trying to make them as happy as possible. However, he is depicted as being abusive and domineering towards his wife, and also causes his daughter extreme misery by forcing her to pretend to be a boy.

Irony of raising Ahmed

Ahmed's father decided to raise Ahmed as a boy, despite the fact she was born a girl. He does this as otherwise his inheritance will go to his younger brothers, and he wants to prevent this from happening. However, raising Ahmed as a boy causes her great misery and issues with her identity, which ultimately leads to her rejecting her family and leading a life of seclusion. Therefore, Ahmed's father's attempt to prevent inheritance issues doesn't work.

Irony of marriage

Ahmed is miserable in her life, pretending to be someone she isn't. This being said, she decides to marry her cousin Fatima and enters into a marriage deprived of intimacy. This is ironic, as we might expect Ahmed to avoid marriage so she doesn't get caught.
