Noboru Kuroda
Son of Fusako. A thirteen year old boy who reject the conventions of society. He is impressed with the vastness of the sea and is impressed by Ryuji's desires for honor and his masculine identity. However, he becomes disillusioned with Ryuji when he abadons the sea after marrying his mother.
Ryuji Tsukazaki
A sailor and Fusako's lover. He believes that he is destined for glory and honour but is unsure as to how this will happen. After falling in love with Fusako he abandons his love for the sea, disappointing Noboru.
Fusako Kuroda
Noboru's mother and Ryuji's lover and later wife.
The Chief
A boy known simply as the "The Chief" to his gang of boys which Noboru is part of.
