Gösta Berling
Gösta is the main character and the hero of the story. He is removed from his position as a priest for his drinking habits. He originates from the Lutheran lineage. In the book, he almost freezes to death. Gösta is saved from death by the Mistress of Ekeby and in return, he serves the Mistress at the manor as a knight. The Knights revolt and overthrow the Mistress.
Mistress of Ekeby (Margarita)
The Mistress of Ekeby is the wife of the Major. She holds the most power at Manor of Ekeby and saves Gösta from death. Margarita offers the Gösta and other Knights a place to stay in exchange for servitude. They make a covenant that will honor the girl who Gösta had deceived. The Mistress is later overthrown by the Knights of the Manor.
Marianne Sinclaire
Marianne is an actress living at the Manor of Ekeby. She is evicted from the property by the Mistress for kissing Gösta.
