    Penelope's Poem

    Kind of Activity:

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will analyze the structural elements of the poem and write their own poems using that structure to summarize Penelope's experience while Odysseus was away.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.6, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.11-12.3

    Structure:

    To begin this activity, as a class, analyze the structure, rhythm, and rhyme scheme of the poem in Chapter 13:

    - Four-line stanzas
    - First three lines of each stanza include end rhyme
    - Final word of the line of each stanza rhymes with other stanzas
    - Semi-regular rhythm of each line (iambs)...
