What is the moral of Morrison’s fable? How do you know?
Students will most likely say the moral of the fable is to engage in living language instead of dead language. They may guess this because Morrison spends most of the speech talking about the impact of dead/oppressive languages. Students may also argue that the moral is that language can and should be a bridge between people and especially between generations. Morrison emphasizes this point toward the end of the speech. In either case, the moral is implicit, more implicit than it would be in a traditional fable.
