The Moon and Sixpence includes offensive racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and fatphobic language and ideas that reflect ideas that were accepted by society at the time. It is important to address both the fact that this is a product of the era in which the author lived and wrote the novel and also its problematic nature for contemporary readers. This is especially true considering that while the racist, sexist, and xenophobic ideas presented in the novel are not as prominent in society, they still exist today.
