Chapter 43

The narrator describes the difficulty in writing about Strickland and how unsatisfactory it may be for readers, as he lacks many details of his day-to-day life, even when they lived in Paris at the same time. He never saw him spending time with Blanche or painting in his studio. He reiterates that his relationships with women were insignificant, as they served him only in his fits of lust before he tossed them aside. The narrator describes Strickland as a truly odious man, but a great one nonetheless, whose passions were entirely wrapped up in his artistic ambitions.
