The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Catfishing

Catfishing is used figuratively by the author to represent sex predation on the internet. When Issa starts using the internet at the age of eleven, she interacts with different men who are strangers. The reader knows that Issa is a young girl by being introduced to adult content. For instance, the men go to the extent of asking Issa what she is wearing inside, which is explicit content that should not involve children.

The motif of the internet

The internet is used as a motif for good and bad things associated with online activities. The internet is a powerful tool that stimulates the economy, social interactions and communication. However, the reader realizes that the internet is a double-edged sword. For instance, cybercrime, bullying, and sexual predation endanger young children who use the internet.

The symbolism of unfaithfulness

Issa's father is the epitome of infidelity but plays the victim. Since childhood, Issa has known her father as a role model and a man of integrity. Issa viewed her parents' marriage as perfect because they lived happily. However, the abrupt news of divorce left Issa flabbergasted. Issa's father blamed his wife for the divorce, and Issa immediately started hating her mother. Ironically, it was later realized that Issa's father was the culprit because he had several secret women outside his marriage.

The dwarf series

The dwarf series by Issa symbolizes the fruits of hard work, determination and resilience. Since knowing how to use the internet at the age of 11, Issa started exploring how to convert her Time in social media into a money-making machine. After some time, Issa developed a web that enabled her to come up with the dwarf series, which became the most viewed series episode on many media channels and platforms.
