What is the Opportunity rover? Why is Watney tempted to retrieve it on his journey to the MAV 4? Why doesn't he?
The Opportunity was a Mars rover that was operational from 2004 to 2018. It was still in operation when Andy Weir wrote The Martian. In Watney's world, the rover has been out of service for decades, similar to the Pathfinder.
Watney is tempted to retrieve the Opportunity because he would be able to use the rover's communications system to get back in contact with NASA. He wants to do this for two reasons. First, communication with NASA would allow him to work through many of the difficulties he'll face on his journey to the MAV 4 with a group of people....
