Relationship to Other Books

The Fellowship of the Ring is but a small portion of Tolkien's exhaustive writing on Middle Earth. In addition to being the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it pulls from a deep well of history written well before Tolkien started on the trilogy. The Silmarillion provides a collection of myths and stories from throughout the history of Middle Earth, as well.
