  1. 1

What allusions does Loy make in the poem?

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this poem is the mixture of allusions to various mythologies and cultures. She begins the poem by referencing Lucifer, the biblical symbol of evil and transgression, but also references Greek, Persian, and Egyptian folklore. For example, she alludes to Lethe from Greek mythology, which is a river of the underworld.

  2. 2

How does Loy use carnival imagery?

Loy sets the scene of this lunar party by alluding to a carnival. She does this by describing "stellectric signs, wing shows on Starway, Zodiac carrousel." By doing this, Loy creates a chaotic and fun atmosphere, emphasizing the thrill-seeking attitudes of the party-goers. In these descriptions, she also combines words we might understand, like "electric," with lunar terms like "Stella," in order to set the scene. Loy has often been credited for her imaginative use of language, often creating new words in her poetry.
