The Heat of the Day Imagery

Gustatory imagery of autumn

The description of Stella and Robert’s meeting is followed up with rich imageries. One of those is the interesting description of autumn with taste. The autumn is described as having a sweet taste from the moment of waking, from the dust and smoke settling to observe the daytime. It is to be noted that the sweet taste paradoxically comes from the smoke and dust of the first air raids of London, so this merging of the contrasts creates a more intense image.

Visual imagery of London

There are quite a few instances of visual descriptions of London as a place where the tension of war and the closeness of the enemy is palpable. Stella feels comfort walking through the city as the nighttime falls, seeing the peacetime lighted windows and lamps of the city, but with soon comes the uneasiness with the falling of muteness over London with only watchful figures on some doorways noticeable.

Visual imagery of Mount Morris

There is a long description of Mount Morris with the visual imagery of a river without any bridge sweeping through the valley toward the house, cliffs, meadows and woods. It is a typical imagery to describe the beauty of the surrounding nature and the fairy tale house in the middle of it. It is a place far away from the war, perfectly isolated.

Tactile imagery of Cousin Nettie’s presence

Roderick visits Cousin Nettie, who reveals that she feigned madness on her own accord to live as she wanted. Roderick feels her sanity in the room, and it frenzies as well as seduces him. Her presence is described with tactile imagery; it could be felt “condensing around her in pure drops”. The silence in the room is also described as a silence that could never be heard again.
