The 10 percent

Tithing symbolizes gratefulness to God and fellow human beings. The amount given as tithe is 10% of an individual's total income in a given period. The salesman emphasizes the importance of appreciating God and giving a small percentage of earnings to help the poor through tithing. Hafid is reminded that God is above everything and that for one to be successful, he must be faithful and disciplined. Therefore, giving tithe is part of developing faith in God to help one succeed.

The symbolism of discipline and faith

Hafid is a symbol of faith and discipline. Throughout the book, Hafid strictly follows the teachings of his mentor, who assures him that the only way to succeed as a salesman is by having faith and remaining disciplined. To his words, Hafid reads all the ten laws in the scrolls and maintains a high level of discipline and faith. Towards the end of the book, the reader learns that Hafid becomes very wealthy because he believes in his mentor's teachings.

The Bible

The Bible is a symbol of religious authority. The good salesman refers to the Bib every time he advises Hafid. For instance, Hafid’s mentor says that the Bible authorizes Christians to treat their fellow human beings with humility and respect. Therefore, in the context of business, Hafid’s mentor reminds him of the significance of respecting the customer. Even when customers have different opinions, the salesperson must respect their opinion. Therefore, the people signify authority because it directs Christians on how to treat others.
