The purpose of the spin cycle of a washing machine is to remove excess water from clothes. A washing machine drum with radius, $r$ and velocity, $v$, will have $a_{rad}=v^{2}/r$ caused be a centripetal force acting towards the centre of the drum. Due to the inertia of the clothes they will move in a straight line, but the reaction force and friction provided by contact with the drum will cause them to begin to rotate with the drum. The clothes will continue in this pattern but the water inside the drum and on the clothes will slip through the holes on the edges of the drum and continue their motion in a direction tangential to the rotation of the drum.
