Chapter 4 - Newton's Laws of Motion - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 123: Q4.28

Answer

See work.

Work Step by Step

The backward-directed force of the road on the car, and of air resistance on the car, cause the car to come to a stop on a level road. When the car increases its speed on the same road, the forward-directed force of the road on the car causes this to happen. The tires push on the road in a backward direction, and the reaction force pushes the tires forward.
