Chapter 31 - Alternating Current - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 1043: Q31.3

Answer

We know:

Work Step by Step

We consider the scenario of a perfect capacitance and inductor here. Now, for resistors, electrical energy is always dissipated as heat. Thus, they have non-zero powers. For inductors, in one half of an AC cycle, they store electrical energy in the magnetic field. In the other half, they release energy to the power supply. For capacitors, in one half of the cycle, they store electrical energy in their electric field. In the other half, they give it back to the power supply. Thus, for inductors and capacitors, the average power is zero.
